You have spent years on the front lines in your neighborhood, fighting crime, saving lives, putting out fires, you have seen things many people will never have to witness. Choosing a career on the police force, as a firefighter or EMT is not for just anyone. It hasn’t been easy. The stress, high stakes, and traumatic events eventually effect any normal person’s state of mind. It is completely common to be experiencing flashbacks, sadness, anxiety, difficult thoughts and feelings, or desensitization. It can leave you feeling lost. It is also common for first responders to use alcohol or drugs to cope with these thoughts and feelings.
